Spotify Wins Streaming Royalties Legal Battle

In a significant victory for Spotify, the streaming giant recently won a long-running court case involving the music of Eminem. The case was heard by the Tennessee Federal Court on September 5th 2024.
The case revolved around allegations that Spotify had streamed Eminem’s music without proper authorisation, which Eminem’s Legal team argued, potentially impacted upon the artist’s royalties. The court’s decision marks a crucial moment in the ongoing battle over music rights in the digital age. As various Streaming Services continue to dominate the music industry, the legal landscape surrounding intellectual property (IP) rights has become increasingly complex. Once again this case highlights the challenges artists and streaming platforms face in navigating these waters.
Antony Oswin, a leading Music & IP Legal Expert from Achieve Legal says “Spotify’s win unnexpected win underscores the importance of clear licensing agreements, and the need for robust legal frameworks, to protect both artists and streaming services. As the music industry evolves further, particularly with the increasing encroachment of AI (“Artificial intelligence”), such cases will likely shape the future of how music is distributed and monetised online”.
